Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left the family, it was managed by her mother, grandmother and godparents. While a small girl, Ford was battling obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she realized that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. She also worked regularly at the theater, ultimately becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
